Fellow’s applied field experience in Mozambique provides window into U.S. embassy work

Applied field experience is an essential part of the Rotary Peace Fellowship. Sarah Sanderson (International Christian University, 2015-17) recently completed the field experience portion of her fellowship at the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique. The goal of a State Department internship is to get a broad picture of how a U.S. embassy works. Over 10 weeks, Sanderson rotated through different divisions, including financial management and consular and public affairs.

Sanderson also spent time with U.S. Ambassador H. Dean Pittman, just one example of the valuable networking opportunities that fellows have while seeing firsthand what work is like in their fields of interest.

“The 10 weeks with the Foreign Service in Mozambique was an incredible chance for me to grow personally and professionally,” she says. “I’m grateful to Rotary International for making such an opportunity possible.” Read more.

	65 Rotary Peace Fellows unite to call for an end to police brutality in the U.S.

	In response to the killings of Terence Crutcher, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and nearly 1,000 other civilians this year, 65 Rotary Peace Fellows from 23 countries have signed a statement calling for legislation to end what is widely considered to be discriminatory policing and unlawful use of force among some police in the United States. Half of the peace fellows who endorsed the statement are U.S. citizens. Adding their voice to calls from civil rights groups, the peace fellows say they seek to raise awareness about violence that disproportionately affects the black community and other communities of color in the United States, and to call for congress to take action. 	Leaving the University of Queensland in the pursuit of peace

	Nabi Sahak (University of Queensland 2014-16) is no stranger to conflict. He was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan, and lived in that conflict zone for 23 years before coming to the United States in 2002. As a war survivor, he longs to change the world for the better, and he’s well on the way to doing so after graduating with a Master of International Studies (Peace and Conflict Resolution) from Australia’s University of Queensland in July. “I believed then and I believe now that peace is everyone’s natural right,” he says, “and it’s everyone’s moral obligation to defend and protect it.” Read more about Sahak’s journey.
