Medicines safety body, NPS MedicineWise will be wound up on 31 December, after the Federal Government confirmed it will not reverse the Coalition’s pre-election Budget plans to de-fund the organisation.
In a statement released this morning, the NPS MedicineWise Board revealed that the Government had confirmed it would proceed with plans to redesign the Quality Use of Therapeutics, Diagnostics and Pathology Program, following a “rapid-review” of the measure by Deloitte Access Economics.
NPS MedicineWise Chair, Dr Andrew Knight, said the redesign had catastrophic implications for the organisation’s role and funding and had left the Board with no alternative but to wind up the company on 31 December.
“NPS MedicineWise does not agree with the decision to proceed with the redesign,” he said.
“We believe it will prove to be a poor decision and will make the safe and wise use of medicines in Australia much harder to achieve.” More details in today's issue of Pharmacy Daily.
