Leaders from Australia’s two major parties have confirmed that they will continue to support the community pharmacy sector, in letters sent to the Pharmacy Guild of Australia.
As the Federal election campaign draws to a close, both Prime Minister, Scott Morrison and Shadow Health Minister, Mark Butler, reiterated their plans to cut the general Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme co-payment from $42.50 by $10 and $12.50 respectively from 01 January 2023.
The two politicians said their parties would work with the Guild to support patients while not adversely impacting the viability of community pharmacies.
Prime Minister, Morrison, pledged “to support initiatives that assist the community pharmacy profession to fulfil their scope of practice and to provide Australian patients with access to vital medicines, healthcare services and support”.
While Shadow Health Minister, Mark Butler, told the Guild that “Labor remains committed to the central place that pharmacy plays in the primary healthcare sector”.
“Pharmacy represents a crucial pillar of the broader health system and is not, and should not be seen as, part of the broader retail sector,” Butler said.
