| Killed PC's widow wins law change |
| |
| | | PC Andrew Harper was 28 and newly married when he was dragged to his death while answering a late-night burglary call in Berkshire in 2019. Three teenagers were jailed for manslaughter, with one sentenced to 16 years and two to 13 years. Since the killing, PC Harper’s widow Lissie has campaigned for the killers of emergency workers to get mandatory life sentences. And now, the government has said the so-called Harper’s Law will be introduced in England and Wales as soon as possible. Mrs Harper, from Wallingford in Oxfordshire, said it had been a "long journey" but her late husband "would be proud to see Harper's Law reach this important milestone". Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "It is with thanks to the dedication of Lissie and his family that I am proud to be able to honour Andrew's life by introducing Harper's Law." The law could be on the statute books by early next year. You can read our earlier explainer on the campaign here. | |

| Sixth person dies after US parade ramming |
| |
| |
| A man accused of ramming a car into a Christmas parade in Wisconsin on Sunday is to be charged with six deaths after another victim - a child - died. Darrell Brooks, 39, wept as he was charged in court with five counts of intentional homicide. Prosecutors said further charges would be filed. Police say Brooks drove in a "zig-zag pattern" to hit as many people as possible at the Waukesha parade. Bail was set at $5m (£3.7m) due to his extensive criminal background. The boy killed was eight-year-old Jackson Sparks, who was hit alongside his 12-year-old brother, Tucker. He had been marching with his baseball team when he was struck. His brother, who suffered a fractured skull, is expected by family members to recover. | |

| | | | | I knew that my first return to the country of my birth since the Taliban swept to power in August would raise many questions for me. How much has the nation changed since the Taliban ousted the Western-backed government? Would the Afghan people finally get the peace they have longed for? What future would there be for women and girls who are already being pushed out of public life by their new rulers? There was one question however I had not expected to be asking myself. What strength must it take to come to work, day after day, week after week, month after increasingly harrowing month, without getting paid? But that is exactly what I have found out. From healthcare workers in Kandahar to cleaners at Kabul hospitals, none of Afghanistan's public healthcare staff have been paid since the government fell and foreign aid came to a halt. | |

| Jacob McLaughlin invited only four friends to his Sing Your Dialect karaoke event, hosted on Twitter on Monday evening. But the link went viral and more than 150,000 people tuned in - including England footballer Declan Rice and rapper and boxer KSI. Read about it here. Meanwhile in Cambridge, Santa hats have appeared on the heads of the carved figures of St John's Chapel. They're several metres up the building - and no one's quite sure how they got there. | |
