Good Morning Voornaam,

Ghost Wrap is a quickfire podcast that brings you the latest on Spar, Equites - Shoprite, Absa, Italtile, Fortress, Sanlam, Thungela, Kumba and Gemfields. You won't believe how much you can learn in under eight minutes! This podcast is proudly sponsored by Mazars. Listen to it here>>>

Ghost Bites:

  • Aspen takes a big step for vaccines in Africa
  • The restructuring of Ellies is an expensive process, but operations seem to be moving in the right direction at least
  • Northam juices up the Royal Bafokeng offer by increased the cash component (not the offer price)
  • PBT pulled off a smart deal with Sanlam that sees it offload the preference shares in the B-BBEE structure to Sanlam, a far more natural owner of such an investment
  • Shoprite can buy most (but not all) of Massmart's cash & carry stores - and no, I'm still not sure what the appeal is

For these updates and many more, including director dealings from a busy day on the JSE, read Ghost Bites>>>

Do you have your own business?

I know how tough it is out there. So do my fellow co-founders at bizval, one of the startups that I am proudly involved in.

To give you an opportunity to reflect on such a tricky year and to celebrate our first few months of operations, we are making bizval live valuations absolutely free to Ghost Mail readers this month. This means that you can use our professional tool to get a valuation of your business, while testing our new scenario offering that lets you play around with assumptions and see the impact on the valuation.

It makes no sense not to use this offer worth R2,500. Just use the coupon REFLECT on checkout to qualify.

A weak day for the rand

Having touched the R17.55 level yesterday and without any obvious reason for doing so, the rand is in a precarious position for the release of US CPI numbers. We also have the FOMC meeting with the next interest rate decision. The expectation is a hike of 50 basis points, which the market seems to have priced in. The ECB interest rate decision is also coming later this week.

In TreasuryONE's view, the major risk is the US inflation number, as the central bank activity is more likely to have been priced in.

Magic Markets font>

The latest episode of Magic Markets is a solid recap of some of the major themes that played out in the markets this year. We talked about topics like energy, inflation, banking and more. Petri Redelinghuys of Herenya joined us for the discussion that you can enjoy here>>>

With that, I leave you to a great Tuesday!
