They reflect the energy and emotions I feel when I see a compelling scene and capture the person or place with color, textures, and patterns. I'm inspired by people and their activities, and am also inspired by places, especially water, and especially when visiting a new place for the first time. I like to use thick paint and often use a palette knife when applying color in oil. When painting in acrylic, I use many layers. I prefer saturated colors with just enough neutrals to spotlight or contrast the center of interest if there is one. My landscape work leans toward semi abstract and impressionistic, and originates through actual experience using on sight sketches or painting plein air. My current landscape series are of the Maine coast, and the Monongahela River Valley. My current figurative interests include colorful portraits on paper that incorporate stencils and collage. I have studied in studios at Seton Hill University and the University of Pittsburgh. After retiring from a 35 year career as a CPA, I began taking workshops with with nationally recognized colorists and landscape painters including Camille Przewodek, Robert Burridge, Cynthia Rosen, and Stephen Haynes. I have also studied with portrait artists Tina Garrett, Juliette Bellmonte, and Manjushree Roy. After winning several local and regional awards, I became a member of the Oil Painters of America and the Exhibitions Co-chair of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists Guild. I am also on the board of the local art league. Thank you for your interest! Learn More About Paula Martino Creating Art is about Creating Magic.
