Hi John,
I hope you enjoyed Part 1 of the Activism Series. I’m excited to keep going and dive deeper into some of the ideas closest to my heart. As you probably know by now, this isn’t just theory for me — it’s something I live, question, and wrestle with daily. And I want to invite you to do the same. There’s always so much to learn and I’m here to help guide you through and hopefully sparking something within you because I truly believe that we all have a bit of activism in us! I’d like to provide you with some clarity because you do have a place in the world of activism, it’s just about finding what feels right for you.
What Makes An Activist?
If we think of the idea of activism what comes to mind? It’s probably overwhelming as we imagine a huge crowd of people shouting loudly with bold statements and signs. Well, I am here to tell you that it’s not about who has the loudest voice but rather the person who is filled with true conviction in what they believe and doing whatever they feel drawn to do with this.
Not all activists are the same and that’s pretty epic to me. It shows that you can be an activist in your own way, doing something that feels manageable in overwhelming times.
Accepting Your Limitations
I think it’s important to mention that just as activism is important, so is accepting your limitations — a crucial part of being an effective activist. It acknowledges that while we may want to change the world, we can’t do it all at once, and it’s important to recognize our own human limitations.
"You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it." – Pirkei Avot. This Jewish proverb continues to ground me. It’s not about doing everything. It’s about doing something.
Types of Activists
The idea that there are so many different forms of activism, really does excite me! It means that whether you know it or not, there is indeed a part of activism within you. Let’s take a look at the different types and take a moment to reflect on which one (or ones) speak to you most.
The Disruptor
You shake things up and challenge the status quo, even when it makes people uncomfortable — because silence is more dangerous than disruption!
The Healer
You mend what's been broken with compassion and presence, reminding us that justice also looks like restoration.
The Storyteller
You speak truth through art, words, and witness — because stories soften hearts and spark revolutions.
The Builder
You create new systems and structures that include everyone, knowing justice needs more than critique — it needs vision.
The Guide
You walk alongside others, not out front, but beside — helping people see more clearly and move more freely.
The Caregiver
You show up with love, food, and safe spaces, proving that caring for people is activism.
The Advocate
You use your voice and privilege to amplify others’, refusing to be quiet when it matters most.
The Resister
You stand firm and say “no more,” using your refusal as a way to fight for what’s right.
The Connector
You build bridges between people and movements, because you know solidarity is stronger than ego.
The Visionary
You dream boldly and believe another world is possible — then take small, real steps to make it so.
