I had a meeting last week with my team to talk through some issues that had come to my attention recently. Some issues were easy to resolve. We tackled those quickly.

Others, though, were thorny and I could see folks were uncomfortable discussing the details of the situations. Conversation began to stall as folks got quiet. They were concerned about creating an awkward moment. I was more concerned that we wouldn’t resolve the issues and the problematic cycles could continue -- as would the back-channel conversations and meetings.

“Guys, we can’t get quiet now,” I told them. “This is a family discussion. It’s time for honesty. We’re professionals. We know how to do this right. So let’s just put it all on the table and handle it.”

That broke the ice a bit more and we were able to clear the air on the bigger issues. We have to handle others but this was a good start.

“Nice” doesn’t cut it when it comes to company culture and real resolution and productivity, as we see in today’s Leadership & Development story. “Nice” will stall you. But honesty and professionalism will lead you to progress, innovation and real trust.

How can I serve you better with this brief? Let me know! And if you enjoy this brief, tell others so they can benefit also.
