My birthday is coming quickly so I’m starting to source cake ideas. There are only two of us in my self-isolation bunker, so a two-layer stunner might be overkill—although I haven’t ruled it out entirely.

For a single-layer situation with similar ceremony, I’m considering an upside-down cake, like this one topped with glistening wheels of lemon—although, as my colleague Kendra recently wrote, nearly any kind of fruit would work. I have a bunch of oranges and a bag of frozen cherries waiting to be used, and that sounds to me like as good a combo as any. Tune into my Instagram to find out if I follow through.
