We generally remember ancient Rome for its sprawling empire, powerful (and sometimes mad) emperors, and grand architecture.

But obscured by our fascination with the might and drama of imperial Rome is the fact that Rome reached its greatness through a far different form of government.

In fact, Caesar Augustus inherited 90% of the territory of his Empire from the Roman Republic.

The story of how the Roman Republic emerged from a group of warring tribes in the middle of the Italian Peninsula to dominate the Mediterranean and, later, most of Europe is a fascinating tale of political achievement, military genius, and the perils of success.

In March, to help tell this important story to Americans nationwide, we will release our newest free online course, “The Rise and Fall of the Roman Republic.” And I wanted you to be one of the first to know.
