Opioid abuse in Ind. costly for state, employers An Indiana University study found opioid misuse costs the state about $4 billion per year and was linked to $752 million in potential lost wages in 2016. Employee absenteeism related to opioid use and the use of prescription pain medications at work are key issues for employers, and Wellness Council of Indiana Executive Director Jennifer Pferrer said the opioid crisis has significantly reduced the ability of businesses to hire skilled workers.
