By Matt Sepic | MPR News Opening statements are due to get underway this morning in the trial of former Brooklyn Center police officer Kimberly Potter charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of Daunte Wright. In body camera video from an April traffic stop, Potter is heard shouting “Taser” just before firing a shot at the 20-year-old Black man with her handgun. Potter and another officer were trying to arrest Wright on an outstanding warrant when he broke free and got back into his car. A predominately white jury evenly split between men and women is hearing the case. Potter’s defense team contends the shooting was an accident. Prosecutors will likely highlight Potter’s extensive training in both firearms and Tasers over her 26-year law enforcement career. They’re expected to argue that Potter was reckless and negligent.
