One year ago, Republicans attacked our democracy

One year ago, Republicans waged a direct attack on our democracy. And they haven't stopped since. In fact, they have only escalated their attack through the passage of horrific, anti-voter state laws, and through hundreds of "mini" insurrections at local Council, Commission and Board meetings.

From the violent right-wing mob instigated by Trump to storm the Capitol, to the disgraceful Republicans in Congress – including Oregon's Cliff Bentz – who voted to subvert the will of the American people and throw out millions of legally cast ballots in an attempt to overturn the outcome of the 2020 Presidential Election, January 6th was a sad and shameful day in our nation's history.

Our democracy held on throughout that dark day. But one year later, its hold is tenuous.

As Oregonians get ready for the critical 2022 midterm elections, we are all hard-pressed to find ballot-bound Oregon Republicans who are willing to tell us the truth: That Joe Biden won the 2020 Presidential Election in one of the most secure elections in American history.

Nearly every candidate at a recent GOP gubernatorial forum has backed the idea that the 2020 election was fraudulent. They're even trying to cast doubt on vote-by-mail, an Oregon institution.

Multiple Oregon legislators – including the new leader of the Oregon House Republican Caucus, the treasurer of the Oregon Republican Party, and the Oregon GOP's most recent nominee for Secretary of State – have signed onto letters raising doubt about the outcome of the 2020 election and demanding a "forensic audit" of the election.

Apparently, these high-ranking Republicans are either unaware that Oregon County Clerks are actually required to conduct post-election random audits, or these Republicans are simply more interested in blowing out more Trumpian smoke. My guess is that it's both.

Meanwhile, Trump's lackeys have shown their contempt for Americans and contempt of Congress, refusing to comply with subpoenas from the January 6th Committee and trying to cover up their roles in the attack on the Capitol.

Republicans have spent the past year spreading lies and disinformation, whether about the 2020 election, the safety and security of our vote-by-mail elections, about January 6th, about a myriad of solid Democratic policy proposals, and tragically, about COVID-19. These cynical and disingenuous efforts, if allowed to succeed, are poised to further disrupt and harm American families and damage our democracy beyond repair.

With so much at stake in the 2022 midterms, from Democratic majorities in Congress, to keeping the Governor's office in Democratic hands, to our majorities in Salem, we cannot afford to give an inch.

This is not hyperbole, and these are not normal times. We are at the most significant electoral crossroads in any of our lifetimes, and we are in a battle to save our trembling democracy.

We can fight back and win by doing what we do best: Organizing and mobilizing Oregonians to vote, and electing Democrats up and down the ballot, all across Oregon. You make that work possible. Are you in?
