On the Go

I've written before about my wife and I rescuing cats, capturing feral ones and strays, having them neutered or spayed, and then attempting to find them homes. Sometimes we're successful with the latter and sometimes not, in which case those critters end up making a home with us. One of those that we've had for about four years now was recently injured. He had disappeared for just over a week, and we thought we'd lost him. We canvassed the neighborhood, distributed flyers and sent out e-mails, but no one had seen him. Then, just over a week ago at three o'clock in the morning he awoke me by calling at the foot of the bed. He had made it back from wherever he had been and came in through the pet door as he was used to doing. His right hind leg was injured. The next day the vet said he had an inflamed joint, no broken bones, but an abrasion around the joint of that hind leg.

Since then we've had to keep him isolated in the front room and give him medicine every day by squirting it from a syringe into his mouth. Cats are not easy patients. You can't explain to them what you're doing and why you're doing it. Having known lots of cats, however, has given us lots of practice. Still, a cat that is used to roaming free gets a bit stir crazy pretty quickly. He's mending well but has several more weeks of convalescence to complete a thirty day cycle of medication. Pet owners and those who have children know what I mean when I say that there is never an issue of focus when it comes to the animal's or child's needs. You do what is necessary.

Why should it be any different when an artist approaches his or her art? Focus is necessary in order to make good work and to do all the necessary things to take care of business. The art will not make itself. Customers and clients will not automatically seek one out. Phone calls will not make themselves nor will any of the dozens of other business actions be completed without the necessary focus and activity to make things happen. Art is not an injured kitty, but it needs daily attention in order to flourish.
