Redistricting: Ohio Republicans say they will unveil their plan today to redesign the state’s legislative district maps, teeing them up for approval sometime next week in time for a Sept. 15 constitutional deadline. Andrew Tobias reports the Ohio Redistricting Commission will meet twice today at the Ohio Statehouse, first at 10 a.m., when Republicans will unveil their map proposal. At a second meeting at 2 p.m., the commission will have the chance to vote to formally introduce the map, which under the state Constitution is required before final approval.
County vaccinations: Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley has joined the county’s Common Pleas Court judges in requiring employees to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. Robert Higgs reports that the county executive, Armond Budish, has proposed an incentive plan providing $100 to all county employees who have been vaccinated.
Mills trial: Former Cuyahoga County Jail Director Ken Mills’ defense team rested Wednesday afternoon after calling two witnesses who testified on his behalf. Cory Shaffer reports Mills did not take the stand in the trial, where he faces a series of charges that accuse him of negligence and mismanagement in the run-up to a string of historic inmate deaths in 2018. Closing arguments are expected to be delivered this morning.
Max Soviak: Thousands of people paid their respects in Erie County for the funeral procession of Navy Corpsman Maxton Soviak, who was killed last month in a terrorist attack at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan. American flags lined the lawns of homes along South Street as the funeral procession passed through Soviak’s hometown of Berlin Heights, reports Cameron Fields. Soviak was posthumously promoted to Hospital Corpsman Third Class and was also awarded the Fleet Marine Force Corpsman warfare badge and a Purple Heart. Nan Whaley: The FBI suspected Democratic governor candidate Nan Whaley accepted tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from a contractor around the time of her election as Dayton mayor in 2013, Jeremy Pelzer reports. Search warrant applications were filed by FBI special agents in October 2013 and July 2014, but Whaley said the claims were baseless.
'Dark money': Seth Richardson reports outside money has taken serious hold in the Cleveland mayoral race. Its prevalence has intensified as early voting continues for the Sept. 14 primary with what appears to be a competitive race between seven candidates to succeed retiring Mayor Frank Jackson. Only two candidates, former Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed and attorney Ross DiBello, said they outright disavowed any spending.
Afghanistan: When the war in Afghanistan started, U.S. soldiers still had the tragedy of 9/11 fresh in their minds. Now the war is the longest in U.S. history. Cameron Fields interviews veterans about their feelings on the war, which officially ended Aug. 30.
9/11 and kids: In primary school, my kids wore red, white and blue and stood in an approximation of an American flag for a photo on Patriot Day. But they didn’t understand the shorthand of 9/11, how one evil plot on one day could dramatically alter this country. Laura Johnston writes about how you talk to your kids.
Vaccinations: Delaware County has vaccinated the highest share of residents of any Ohio county. Julie Washington lists the state’s top 10 counties for vaccination rates, which includes quite a few from Northeast Ohio.
COVID deaths: Coronavirus deaths in the U.S. have surpassed 650,000 and in Ohio, 21,020 state residents have died with the virus, with rates increasing likely due to the highly contagious delta variant. Laura Hancock lists the Ohio counties with the highest number of deaths from Aug. 1, starting with Montgomery.
Avon Lake deaths: Officials identified two adults and two children found dead in a suspected murder-suicide in Avon Lake, Kaylee Remington reports. Jeffrey Hull, 50; Heidi Hull, 46; Garrett Hull, 9; and Grant Hull, 6, were found dead with gunshot wounds Tuesday in the home on English Turn near Avon Belden Road.
Holocaust monument: Northeast Ohio Jewish organizations will come together Sunday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Kol Israel Holocaust Monument, which serves as a memorial for victims of the Holocaust. Alexis Oatman reports the annual event is held each year amid the Jewish High Holy Days, on the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Boat show: The 65th Progressive Cleveland Boat Show & Fishing Expo in January will be the first public show held in the I-X Center post-COVID, reports Marc Bona. The previous boat show in the building was in early 2020, not long before the facility was closed to shows because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Oops: The music video for Lorde's cover of "Break the Ice" is stripped-down and borderline cottagecore in its execution, with the 24-year-old singer clad in a bright-red crop top and pants that seem to visually recall Britney Spears' red latex jumpsuit from the "Oops!…I Did It Again" video from 2000.
