What's making news in New Orleans?
By Chad CalderA shore thing: Lincoln Beach, the 17-acre stretch along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans East, has been closed for five decades. The city is even eyeing a possible revival. But don't tell Sage Michael and his merry band of urban campers who've made the beach home, cleaning it up and adding trash cans, benches, nature trails and other amenities. Casino battle: It's official: the voters of St. Tammany Parish will decide the fate of the proposed Slidell-area casino on Nov. 13. But is the St. Tammany Parish Council's narrow vote approving the referendum a preview of how divisive and heated the battle the next phase will be? Reporter Sara Pagones has some analysis of a debate that is still heating up. City scene: Meanwhile, the New Orleans City Council has been busy, with a measure to block any attempt to move City Hall to Armstrong Park for at least a year, the approval of a $15 hourly wage for employees of city contractors and the renaming of three parks and a street to honor some people who weren't segregationists or supporters of the Confederacy. Also in the news: Some LSU athletes begin to see the benefit from new rules allowing them to make money off their own likeness, 19 missing children were rescued in metro New Orleans by U.S. Marshals and hopes appear to be fading for the husband of a Kenner native missing after the Miami-area condo collapse. You'll find all this and much more in today’s Front Page. Thanks for starting your day with us. CC |
