A shore thing: Lincoln Beach, the 17-acre stretch along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans East, has been closed for five decades. The city is even eyeing a possible revival. But don't tell Sage Michael and his merry band of urban campers who've made the beach home, cleaning it up and adding trash cans, benches, nature trails and other amenities.
Casino battle: It's official: the voters of St. Tammany Parish will decide the fate of the proposed Slidell-area casino on Nov. 13. But is the St. Tammany Parish Council's narrow vote approving the referendum a preview of how divisive and heated the battle the next phase will be? Reporter Sara Pagones has some analysis of a debate that is still heating up.
City scene: Meanwhile, the New Orleans City Council has been busy, with a measure to block any attempt to move City Hall to Armstrong Park for at least a year, the approval of a $15 hourly wage for employees of city contractors and the renaming of three parks and a street to honor some people who weren't segregationists or supporters of the Confederacy.
