O captain, LSU's captain, Kayshon Boutte

Just call him captain.

It’s been a year of pain, second-guessing, joy, and, most recently, redemption for LSU’s talented wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. He was injured last October at Kentucky, went through two surgeries, missed spring practice, suffered some serious ups and downs in terms of performance on the field and became a father.

But lately he seems to be breaking out of his early season funk. He was team captain in the Tigers’ loss to Tennessee and wants to have that role again going into Saturday’s game with No. 6-ranked Ole Miss in Tiger Stadium (2:30 p.m., CBS).

LSU can certainly use him. The Rebels bring a potent offense to Baton Rouge that the Tigers will likely have to defeat in a scoring duel similar to last week’s 45-35 win at Florida.

The LSU offense could also use the services of receiver Jack Bech and running back Armoni Goodwin as well. LSU coach Brian Kelly updated their status on Wednesday’s SEC teleconference.

This year’s Ole Miss game marks the 50th anniversary of LSU’s improbable 17-16 win over the Rebels, when the Tigers got off two plays in the final four seconds to get the game-winning touchdown pass from Bert Jones to Brad Davis. Sounds improbable? The Rebels have always thought so.

It’s not only a big football week at LSU, the SEC held its in-person basketball media days in Birmingham this week for the first time since 2019. The LSU men are picked to finish eighth under first-year coach Matt McMahon. In my column I write that McMahon is hardly flashy, but he’s right person in the right place at the right time for the job LSU needs done.

The biggest job for McMahon when he arrived was to rebuild the roster. That started by retaining key players like guard Adam Miller, who missed all of the 2021-22 season with an ACL injury. Miller is back and eager to finally play for LSU after transferring from Illinois.

Football. Basketball. Tigers. Rebels. History. Features. News. Opinion. We’ve got it all for you every day in our LSU coverage. Thanks for subscribing, and we’ll do it again tomorrow.
