Following talks in London with his British counterpart Keir Starmer, Fiala said the British firm Rolls-Royce SMR is considering building a factory for small modular reactors (SMRs) in Czechia. Both countries view nuclear energy as key to their low-carbon energy strategies. Czech energy company ČEZ recently became a strategic partner of Rolls-Royce SMR, acquiring a 20% stake. ČEZ plans to build SMRs with a total capacity of 3 gigawatts by 2050.
Former Czech dissidents and other public figures have called on Prime Minister Petr Fiala and the heads of both chambers of Parliament in an open letter to publicly support the appeal of 11 imprisoned critics of the Russian regime, who are demanding the release of thousands of unjustly prosecuted Russian political prisoners and Ukrainian civilians held in Russia. According to them, there is too little discussion in the Czech Republic about the fact that many Russian citizens resist Vladimir Putin’s autocratic regime and, despite the risk of losing their freedom or even their lives, strive for justice and the protection of human rights in their country.
