Congratulations to Lauren Brown, a science teacher at Madison Park Academy in Oakland, California, who won the 2018 grand prize—a school science lab makeover support package valued at $20,000—in the Shell Science Lab Challenge. Four national finalists were also named and will receive lab makeover packages valued at $8,500. Read the press release.
The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) released a new report that examines states' work to track teacher shortages and surpluses. The analysis includes an overview of promising practices currently being implemented, a snapshot of all 50 states' and the District of Columbia's efforts in addressing teacher supply and demand challenges, and noteworthy state policies by region across the country. Read the Teacher Shortages and Surpluses Databurst and check out the Education News Roundup for a selection of the week's top education news stories.
Lab Out Loud's guest this week is Neal Manegold, director of Minecraft Education. Many listeners are probably familiar with Minecraft, and a few might even know about Minecraft Education Edition, which builds on the open-world game while promoting creativity, collaboration and problem solving in a teacher supervised environment. Join co-hosts Brian Bartel and Dale Basler to hear Neal explain Minecraft Education Edition and discuss how the new chemistry update can allow students to combine and reduce materials within the Minecraft world to explore states of matter, the structure of atoms, chemical reactions and more.

Grades K–College
Student players must find the correct path through a virtual maze constructed purely from information. Teachers can choose from mazes in biology, chemistry, and physics (for high school and undergraduate levels), or try K–12 offerings such as Guess the Animal (biology) and Science for Kids: Beginnings (general science).
Grades K–12
GrowNextGen introduces students to career fields in the agriculture industry and provides curriculum for K–12 teachers to explore agriculture topics in the classroom. Teachers of any level who want to move beyond curriculum can register to be matched with an industry leader who can provide additional support for teaching agriculture topics.
Grades 9–12
This video tutorial from the STEMcoding project features coding activities for absolute beginner programmers that were designed with significant feedback from high school physics teachers.
