Now’s the time to visit the coast’s unique tide pools
By Heather McRea | This week in Coast Lines: There is a free wonderland waiting for you to explore it along Southern California’s coastline and we have some suggestions.
Plus, fewer sewage spills closed Orange County beaches in 2020, and a series of swells will be creating good surf but dangerous conditions along the coast.

Now is among the best times of the year to visit Southern California's free adventure land.
There is no admission required to explore the tide pools that dot the coast offering an intimate look at the sea creatures who call them home. And we've got some suggestions on where to go.
But don't get grabby! Most are in protected conservation areas that are helping the ecosystems rebuild. And anyway, do you want someone poking at you in your home, officials point out.
Read the story. | Sewage spills closing OC beaches are down
Only a few times in the past couple of decades have Orange County beaches experienced as few closures because of sewage spills as they did in 2020.
Also Orange County had only 60.4 "beach mile days" (they take into account how much shore was closed for how long) in 2020, according to a recent report by the OC Health Care Agency. From 2000 to 2012, the average of 205.2.
Some of the cleanest spots mentioned were Huntington City Beach, Crystal Cove Beach, Dana Point Beach and Capistrano Bay District Beach.

A series of swells are expected to visit Southern California beaches into late next week.
The first arrived Wednesday creating 4-foot to 6-foot surf at south-facing beaches through Friday. Two more are expected on its heels.
Good news for surfers, but there are some warnings attached for beachgoers.

Paul Van Doren didn't just put shoes on skaters as the co-founder of the iconic brand Vans, he helped support and shape the beach sports and culture. Van Doren died last week at age 90.

Cargo ships have been seen backed up down the coast as far as Orange County waiting to get into the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, but officials said the traffic jam is starting to improve.

| | | In the ocean
A strange-looking fish some might say only a mother could love washed ashore in Newport Beach. Believed to be a Pacific Football Fish, the anglerfish is supposed to be 3,000 feet deep in the ocean where the bioluminescent orbs at the end of a long stalk the dangles from its head shine in the dark to lure in prey.
