Explore London Transport Museum's glorious new poster gallery

London's public transport networks have long been renowned for commissioning great works of commercial art and design, and now one of the capital's finest museums has launched a brand new gallery, sponsored by the media and entertainment group Global, which will show a whole load of them off.

The Global Poster Gallery in Covent Garden is London Transport Museum's first permanent space dedicated to the history of the poster. It draws from a phenomenal, 30,000-strong archive — one of the largest collections of 20th century graphic art and design in the world — which is cared for at the museum's Acton Depot. Exhibitions at the Global Poster Gallery will also feature loans from other leading collections to explore how the medium has shaped mass communication from the early 1900s to the present day.

Entry to the Global Poster Gallery and its first exhibition, How To Make A Poster, is included with your museum admission, which costs £24 for adults and is free for anyone under the age of 18! Hit the blue button to find out more about this brand new space and book your tickets.

The Pick Of The Bunch

London Transport's first Chief Executive Frank Pick played a key role in revolutionising poster design in the early 20th century. He helped transform what was once a conservative, text-based medium by commissioning pictorial posters in an adventurous array of styles, including ones by eminent avant-garde artists like Edward McKnight Kauffer and Man Ray.

How To Make A Poster

Several works commissioned by Pick will appear in the Global Poster Gallery's inaugural exhibition. How To Make A Poster reveals the people behind the posters. Alongside the final artworks, there are preliminary sketches, artist tools, letters and other archival materials that illustrate the evolution of production techniques across a century.

An Arty Friday Late

On 17 November, you're invited to explore the exhibition, and London Transport Museum as a whole, after hours at the Posters and Posers Museum Late. Enjoy expert talks, create your own retro poster, or unleash your artistic side in a life drawing class — all while enjoying a drink from one of the museum's bars!
