Local company news:
Novus is acquiring an AI specialist startup in Stellenbosch in a related party deal that effectively sees the Novus CEO on both sides of the trade. There are specific regulations in place to help companies navigate this type of thing. For Novus, the appeal here is to introduce AI technology into the textbook operations. In the gold sector, we saw updates come in from AngloGold and DRDGOLD, in both cases telling a positive or mostly positive production story. No such luck at Sibanye-Stillwater, where EBITDA is trending in the wrong direction and at pace. Trematon is an investment holding company that might not be on your radar, but perhaps the latest trading statement will inspire you to take a look at the diversified portfolio. The INAV is up, provided you adjust for the recent capital distribution to shareholders. Get the details in Ghost Bites at this link>>> |

International business news:
The recent trend hasn't been positive for the cheaper quick-service restaurant (QSR) groups like McDonald's or Yum! Brands. Interestingly, the higher income business models like Chipotle Mexican Grill, Wingstop and Sweetgreen seem to be doing better. In this CNBC article referencing industry data, it looks as though higher income consumers are still buying convenience takeaway meals. It makes sense if you think about the purchasing decision for dual-income families or very busy singles. They are buying a time solution as much as a food solution, so they are less price sensitive. There's also the health trend. Sweetgreen's salads sound better for your heart and waistline than McDonald's, so that can't be ignored in terms of frequency of purchase by consumers. This week, we are covering another consumer favourite in Magic Markets Premium: Coca-Cola. If you're curious why this has been a staple of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio, then subscribe to the platform here. |

Macroeconomic Update The dollar is flat ahead of key US data releases this week, with PPI due tomorrow and CPI on Wednesday. Sticky inflation is of course the main stumbling block in the Fed cutting rates, so the markets will be looking for any signs of moderation in prices, especially after the labour market looked softer in recent releases. Despite disappointing Chinese data over the weekend, the rand was resilient and opened firmer this morning. Brent Crude wasn't so lucky after this release, down at $82.52. Key indicators: USD/ZAR R18.42; US 10-year 4.50%; Gold $2,354; Platinum ZAR R18,335; Brent Crude $82.52 This macroeconomic update is based on TreasuryONE's morning update. |
