Joe Crea’s cookbooks donated to Edwins Joe Crea was a beloved and respected food writer and editor at The Plain Dealer who died in 2019. His widow, Gretchen Crea, has donated his collection of about 2,000 food and cookbooks to Edwins Second Chance Life Skills Center. The books – which will aid the students who go through Edwins’ program – are in a specially designed and designated area called The Joe Crea Culinary Library. The shop at 16300 Detroit Avenue hosted its grand opening on Wednesday, June 26 to bring Cleveland-style bagels to the suburbs. READ MORE Pizza is ‘Boom-ing’ at new restaurant in Shaker Height’s Van Aken District Boom’s Pizza, which opened in Lakewood 18 months ago, now has a second restaurant in Shaker Height’s Van Aken District. It takes over the 2,800-square-foot space that formerly housed Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink. Created during the pandemic slowdown, the restaurant is from well-known Cleveland chefs Ben Bebenroth and Jonathan Bennett. READ MORE Vicious Biscuit opens in Montrose Vicious Biscuit celebrated is grand opening in last week. Founded near Charleston, SC, in 2018, the fast-casual Vicious Biscuit is making its northern debut in the former Bomba Taco space in Montrose Center. The kitchen turns fluffy, southern biscuits into a palette for breakfast and brunch indulgences. The menu includes the founding sandwich, The Fat Boy, a freshly made biscuit stuffed with fried chicken, pimento cheese and a drizzle of hot honey. Other favorites include The Vicious, a cheddar jalapeño biscuit, fried chicken, maple sausage gravy, cowboy candy with a maple syrup drizzle. Vicious Biscuit is at 3900 Medina Road, Montrose. The pizza company still sells its pies out of locations in Cleveland’s Ohio City and Collinwood neighborhoods. Citizen Pie Roman Cafe’s last day in operation out of the 2057 East 4th Street store was June 23. PICKS OF THE WEEK Table 45 at the Intercontinental Hotel It’s easy to forget about hotel restaurants and miss a good thing. Table 45 in the Intercontinental Hotel has patio surrounded by tall shrubs laced with twinkling, white lights. Privacy is further enhanced at tables under domed cabanas. The menu includes summer refreshers like watermelon salad that makes a meal when paired with a protein. The dessert chef takes a genius approach to building desserts. For example, the spumoni is deconstructed into three separate presentations -- a scoop of chocolate, a dollop of pistachio and a “cake” of cherry ice creams. Table 45 is at 9801 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland. A convenience for hospital goers, it is open every day. DETAILS DeCheco’s Pizzeria You can’t have too many pizza places. DeCheco’s bills itself as the home of original white pizza in Akron since 1993. Its signature pizzas include BLT to Buffalo chicken. You never know what you’re going to get when you order a drink at the edgy bar, and we mean that in the best way possible.
