DOUBLE DIPPING: A decade ago, the U.S. Justice Department skewered the New Orleans Police Department's system for letting officers work off-duty security jobs, calling it the department’s “aorta of corruption.” The Police Department instituted reforms, but on Thursday it suspended 26 officers from the detail work after news reports exposed possible payroll fraud from officers double dipping or reporting hours they didn't appear to work.
ON SECOND THOUGHT: Entergy New Orleans started shutting off electricity and gas earlier this month for customers who were behind on paying their bills. But dozens of residents lined up at the utility's office to complain they did not receive advance notice of the disconnections - or that they had indeed paid everything that was due. That prompted Entergy on Thursday to restore service and halt shutoffs until Nov. 29.
