Trump arrives in Washington to be arraigned on 2020 election charges |
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to appear in federal court at 4 p.m. ET, to face charges that he illegally attempted to overturn the 2020 election. The former president arrived in Washington this afternoon after departing from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Security barriers have been set up around the federal courthouse that stands just blocks away from the Capitol building that Trump’s supporters stormed on January 6th. A grand jury indicted Trump on Tuesday on four felony counts brought by special counsel Jack Smith, alleging he criminally conspired to hang onto power after losing the 2020 election. Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing, confirmed earlier in the day he was traveling to Washington, telling supporters on this social media site in all caps, “I am being arrested for you.” Today’s proceeding marks Trump’s third arraignment in five months, all while he continues his campaign to retake the White House in 2024. Trump wrote on his site ahead of his appearance, “I need one more indictment to ensure my election!” President Joe Biden, who is vacationing in Delaware, told a reporter he will not be watching this afternoon’s arraignment. |

Body found at floating barrier Texas installed in Rio Grande |
A body was found along the floating barrier of buoys that Texas has installed in the Rio Grande, state authorities have confirmed, but Texas and Mexican officials disagree on the circumstances surrounding the grim discovery. Mexico said the body was found stuck in the buoys, calling the barrier a “violation of our sovereignty.” But a spokesman for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the Mexican government “is flat-out wrong,” and added that preliminary information indicates the drowning occurred before the body floated upstream near the barriers. Mexican authorities also reported a second body had been found about three miles away from where the first body was found. Texas DPS said it could not confirm the discovery of a second body. The bodies have not been identified, according to Mexican authorities. The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Texas over the buoys last week. Abbott responded, “See you in court.” |
U.S. orders partial evacuation of embassy in Niger amid apparent coup |
The State Department has ordered the evacuation of non-emergency personnel and family members from its embassy in Niger following last week’s apparent military coup. “The U.S. Embassy in Niamey has temporarily reduced its personnel, suspended routine services, and is only able to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens in Niger,” the department said in a statement. President Biden today called for the immediate release of Niger’s democratically-elected leader, Mohamed Bazoum. Biden said in a written statement that Niger is "facing a grave challenge to its democracy,” and that the U.S. “stands with the people,” of the West African nation. |

Birth control pills recalled for possible reduced effectiveness, FDA warns |
Two batches of the birth control pill Tydemy have been recalled because they may have reduced effectiveness, the FDA has warned. Drugmaker Lupin Pharmaceuticals has voluntarily recalled the batches after one tested low for ascorbic acid, which “could potentially impact the effectiveness” of the pills. The recalled batches were distributed between June 3, 2022 and May 31 of this year, and have expiration dates of January or September 2024. The FDA said patients taking Tydemy are advised to continue taking their medication and immediately contact their medical provider regarding an alternative treatment. |
