Supreme Court confirms authenticity of draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade |
---|
|
---|
The Supreme Court has confirmed that a leaked draft opinion that would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling is authentic, but not final. |
---|
|
---|
The court said in a statement that while the document is “authentic, it does not represent a decision by the court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case.” |
---|
|
---|
“To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in the statement. “The work of the court will not be affected in any way.” |
---|
|
---|
Roberts has ordered the marshal of the court to launch an investigation into the unprecedented leak of the document, first reported by Politico. |
---|
|
---|
The majority draft written by Justice Samuel Alito declares that Roe, the ruling that guaranteed constitutional protections for abortion rights, “was egregiously wrong from the start.” |
---|
|
---|
President Joe Biden criticized the draft opinion as a “radical decision,” and warned that it could jeopardize other court rulings concerning privacy. |
---|
|
---|
“It concerns me a great deal that we’re going to, after 50 years, decide a woman does not have a right to choose,” Biden said to reporters at Joint Base Andrews. |
