Suspect in attack on Paul Pelosi due in court today |
The man charged in the brutal hammer attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is expected to make his first court appearance today. David DePape, 42, is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and burglary, among other counts, in what San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins described as a “politically motivated” attack. DePape is also facing federal charges of attempted kidnapping and assault with intent to retaliate against a federal official by threatening or injuring a family member. Early Friday morning, DePape broke into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home, went up the stairs and confronted Paul Pelosi sleeping in his bed, and demanded to speak to “Nancy,” according to the criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department. Mr. Pelosi, 82, was able to call 911, and when the officers arrived, they witnessed DePape strike him in the head with a hammer, according to authorities. DePape planned to take Speaker Pelosi hostage and potentially break her kneecaps, as a warning to other members of Congress, federal prosecutors said. The suspect brought with him two hammers, zip ties, rope, and a roll of tape, according to the district attorney. |

Biden campaigns in Florida with one week until midterm elections |
President Joe Biden is hitting the campaign trail in Florida today, with polls showing Republicans favored to flip the House, and neck-and-neck races for control of the Senate, just one week until the midterm elections. Biden will attend fundraisers for Val Demings and Charlie Crist, the Democrats facing uphill battles to unseat GOP incumbents Sen. Marco Rubio and Gov. Ron DeSantis. Former President Barack Obama will campaign for Democrats in Nevada today, and in Arizona on Wednesday. Later in the week, Obama will travel to Pittsburgh to campaign with John Fetterman, the Democrat battling Mehmet Oz for the state’s open senate seat. On Saturday, Obama will also join Biden for a rally in Philadelphia. Former President Donald Trump will hold a rally in Florida this weekend with Marco Rubio, but not Ron DeSantis, his potential rival for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. And former Vice President Mike Pence will be in Georgia today to appear alongside Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, who is in a re-election rematch with Stacey Abrams. |
Herschel Walker, the Republican candidate for Senate in Georgia, is denying accusations from a second woman who says he paid for her to have an abortion, after she appeared in a televised interview this morning. “This was a lie a week ago and it is a lie today,” Walker said in a statement, calling the accuser “some woman I do not know.” |

Migos rapper Takeoff killed in shooting at Houston bowling alley |
Rapper Takeoff, of the hit-making Atlanta rap trio Migos, was killed in an early morning shooting at a Houston bowling alley, his attorney has confirmed to NBC News. He was 28. "Along with my firm, I am devastated by the tragic death of Kirshnik Ball, known to his fans as Takeoff," attorney Drew Findling told NBC News. Authorities confirmed that Takeoff and Quavo, another member of the hip-hop group, were at 810 Billiards & Bowling in downtown Houston when the shooting took place, according to NBC affiliate KPRC of Houston. Officers responded to the scene around 2:40 a.m., and found dozens of people on a balcony outside the third-floor bowling alley, according to police. They discovered a man with a gunshot wound to the head or neck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been announced. |

Parkland school shooter to be sentenced today |
Survivors and family members of the 17 people killed in the Parkland school shooting faced the gunman in court today, ahead of his formal sentencing. Many family members have expressed outrage after the jury spared the gunman the death penalty, and instead recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole. Terri Rabinovitz, grandmother of a 14-year-old killed in the 2018 massacre, told the gunman she hopes he will “burn in hell.” “I’m too old to see you live out your life sentence, but I hope your every breathing moment here on Earth is miserable and you repent for your sins, Nikolas, and burn in hell,” Rabinovitz said in her victim impact statement. The gunman pleaded guilty to all 17 counts of murder last year. His defense team argued he is mentally ill and should not be sentenced to death. |
