Walmart employee kills six in mass shooting at Virginia store |
A Walmart employee opened fire at a Virginia store on Tuesday night, killing at least six people in the second high-profile mass shooting to stun the nation in four days, Chesapeake police said. The shooter was found dead at the scene, and was armed with one handgun and multiple magazines, according to authorities. He has been identified as a 31-year-old manager at the store, who has been with Walmart since 2010, the company said in a statement. A senior law enforcement official described him to NBC News as a disgruntled employee. The identities of the victims have not been announced, pending notification of next of kin, officials said. Employee Briana Tyler said the store’s overnight stocking team of about 15 to 20 people were gathered in the break room, when her manager began shooting at the staff. The shooter and two victims were found in the break room, one person was found dead toward the front of the store, and three others were transported to the hospital where they later died, authorities said. At least six other people were taken to local hospitals with injuries, and one is currently listed in critical condition, according to authorities. The massacre came as customers were inside the store stocking up on items ahead of Thanksgiving. “We’re a couple days before the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Leo Kosinski, the public information officer for the Chesapeake Police Department. “It’s just a bad time all around, just for everybody involved — especially the victims. This is horrible.” |
Suspect in Colorado LGBTQ club shooting makes first court appearance |
The suspect in the mass shooting that left five people dead at a LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs was ordered held without bail in their first court appearance this afternoon. The 22-year-old alleged shooter, who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, according to court documents filed by their public defender, appeared virtually from jail. The suspect could be seen slumped over in a wheelchair with visible facial injuries, and only spoke when directly addressed by the judge. Police have said the shooter was taken down by clubgoers, including an Army combat veteran, after opening fire at the Club Q nightclub on Saturday. The next court date in the case was set for Dec. 6. The U.S. has now been scarred by more than 600 mass shootings for the third straight year, according to The Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit tracker. |

Nearly 55 million Americans traveling for Thanksgiving |
Today is expected to be the busiest day on the roads for the Thanksgiving season, with nearly 49 million people expected to travel by car, according to AAA. The best times to drive are after 8 p.m. tonight, and before 11 a.m. or after 6 p.m. tomorrow, according to AAA guidance. The national average for a gallon of regular gas has dropped 19 cents in the last month, but remains 21 cents higher than a year ago. Air travel is up nearly 8 percent over this time last year, with 4.5 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations, AAA said. In all, AAA predicts 54.6 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving, a 1.5 percent increase over 2021 and 98 percent of pre-pandemic volumes. We’re also keeping a close eye on the weather. While it’s mostly clear today, storms could bring some heavy rain to the South and the Gulf Coast tomorrow. |

Strike on Ukrainian maternity ward kills newborn infant |
A newborn infant was killed in a Russian missile strike on a maternity ward in southern Ukraine, according to officials there. “Grief fills our hearts — a baby who has just appeared in the world has been killed,” Oleksandr Starukh, the regional governor of the Zaporizhzhia region, said in a post on his Telegram channel. The baby’s mother and her doctor were rescued, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. The two-story building “was destroyed,” the service said. The strike came as Russia stepped up its attacks across Ukraine, launching a barrage of missiles on Kyiv and several other cities, Ukrainian officials said. Widespread blackouts have been reported across multiple regions, and Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said that “the vast majority of electricity consumers were cut off.” |
