Trump and Haley go head-to-head in New Hampshire primary |
Voters are heading to the polls today in New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary. The Republican front-runner, former President Donald Trump, is aiming for a knockout blow against his only remaining opponent for the GOP nomination, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley. Haley, who trailed Trump by 22 points in the final Suffolk University/NBC10 Boston/Boston Globe tracking poll, is hoping to pull off a stunning upset. But no matter what happens, Haley’s campaign has implied she will stay in the race. In a memo to supporters, the campaign said “we aren’t going anywhere,” and signed off with “see y’all in South Carolina,” the state that holds the next GOP primary on Feb. 24, and where Haley once served as governor. The Republican battle shrank to a two-person race on Sunday, when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis abruptly dropped out. Polls close in most places across the state at 7 p.m. ET, and the final polls close at 8 p.m. ET. Follow along with the results here. |

San Diego declares state of emergency after wettest January day on record |
The mayor of San Diego has declared a state of emergency after the city was slammed by more than a month’s worth of rain in just one day. San Diego received nearly 3 inches of rain on Monday, making it the city’s wettest January day on record in, the National Weather Service said. The heavy rain caused flash floods that inundated roads and homes, causing significant damage, and forcing a number of high water rescues. At least one death has been linked to the storms that hit Southern California on Monday, when a 60-year-old driver lost control of her vehicle and rolled over on Interstate 15, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said. After a bit of a reprieve today, the active weather pattern is expected to return to the West Coast tomorrow, with heavy rain possible from Washington to northern California. |
Israel says 24 soldiers killed in deadliest day of Gaza offensive |
The Israeli military said its troops are encircling Khan Younis, the second-largest city in Gaza, after 24 of its soldiers were killed in the deadliest day since the invasion of the Hamas-controlled enclave began. An Israel Defense Forces spokesman said that Hamas fired a rocket-propelled grenade at Israeli troops who were preparing to demolish buildings, hitting a tank and causing explosives planted on the buildings to detonate, killing 21 soldiers. Hamas' military wing has taken responsibility for the attack, believed to be the single deadliest incident for Israeli troops since the start of the Gaza offensive. Three other Israeli soldiers were killed in Monday’s fighting. At least 195 people have been killed in Gaza in the last 24 hours, the Gaza health ministry said. In Khan Younis today, the IDF warned residents near two hospitals to evacuate further toward the coastline, as fighting rages near the facilities. |

Jury selection underway in trial of Michigan school shooter’s mother |
Jury selection began today in the trial of Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the Oxford High School shooter. Jennifer Crumbley, and her husband James Crumbley, each face four counts of involuntary manslaughter for the four students their son fatally shot at the school in 2021. Prosecutors have said the Crumbleys bought their son the gun he used in the massacre, ignoring warnings signs about his mental health issues. The Crumbleys, who have both pleaded not guilty, will be tried separately. Last month, their son was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. |
