Man sets himself on fire outside Trump trial after full jury set |
A man set himself on fire in the designated protest area outside of former President Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York City, police said, just as the full jury panel was being seated inside. The NYPD said the man entered a park near the courthouse this afternoon, doused himself in an alcohol-based accelerate, and then ignited himself. Civilians, court officers, and police officers attempted to use coats and fire extinguishers on the man before the FDNY put out the flames. He was taken to the burn unit in critical condition, officials said at a news conference this afternoon. Conspiracy theory pamphlets were found near the man, and it appears he may have posted about his intentions on social media in advance, officials said. Just moments before inside the courthouse, jury selection was completed in the Trump case, with 12 jurors and six alternates now seated. Opening statements are now expected to begin Monday. Trump is accused of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to help his 2016 campaign. He has pleaded not guilty. |
Israel launches limited military strike against Iran |
Israel carried out a limited military strike against Iran and is assessing the extent of the damage it caused, a source familiar with the situation told NBC News. Iranian state media is downplaying the impact of the attack, reporting that air defense systems were engaged and that nuclear sites in central Iran are safe. Israel had vowed to respond after Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles toward the country last weekend. Iran's aerial assault last Saturday was in retaliation for the deadly attack on its embassy compound in Syria on April 1. |
House advances foreign aid as pressure grows on Speaker Johnson |
The House has advanced Speaker Mike Johnson’s $95 billion foreign aid package for Ukraine and Israel, after Democrats stepped in to help push the plan past far-right Republican opposition. Today’s bipartisan move tees up House votes on Saturday on four separate bills for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and other national security concerns. If they pass, the measures would be packaged together and sent to the Democratic-controlled Senate. Johnson is pushing ahead with the plan despite growing opposition from the hardline flank of his party. Today a third House Republican said he would support the effort led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to oust Johnson from his job. |
FAA investigating “unauthorized” cockpit visitor on Colorado Rockies flight |
|
|
The FAA has launching an investigation into what United Airlines describes as an “unauthorized person” in the cockpit of a Colorado Rockies charter flight last week. Video posted to social media appears to show Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens sitting in one of the pilot’s seats while the plane was flying from Denver to Toronto. United said in a statement that it’s “deeply disturbed” by the video, which appeared to happen while the flight was at cruise altitude with the autopilot engaged. The FAA confirmed it is investigating. The Rockies have not commented on the matter. |
