Minnesota dam failure “imminent” due to flooding, dangerous heat for millions |
More severe storms are taking aim at the Midwest today, where a dam in Minnesota is in danger of “imminent” failure due to flooding, while dangerous heat is shifting into the Plains and the South. Catastrophic flooding in Iowa and Minnesota over the weekend has forced evacuations, damaged thousands of homes, and left entire communities underwater. Minnesota’s Rapidan Dam near Mankato is in “imminent failure condition,” Blue Earth County officials warned today, and nearby residents are being urged to evacuate. In the Plains, floods caused the collapse of a railroad bridge that connects Sioux City, Iowa, and North Sioux City, South Dakota. Also today, 48 million people are under heat alerts mostly across the Plains, the lower Mississippi Valley and the Gulf Coast, while the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic are getting a break after days of scorching temperatures. |
New video shows kidnapping of three Israeli hostages |
A group representing the families of Israeli hostages has released graphic new video showing the abduction of three men during the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack. The video shows Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Or Levy and Eliya Cohen crammed into the back of a pickup truck as they are taken into Gaza by gunmen. The release of the video comes a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested he would accept a “partial deal” with Hamas that would free only some of the hostages. Netanyahu struck a different tone today in a speech at the Knesset, saying Israel is fully “committed” to the three-part cease-fire proposal supported by the U.S. that would free all the hostages. Also today, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that another hostage, Mohammad Alatrash, 39, a solider and father of 13, was killed during the Oct. 7 attack. |
Biden attacks Trump on abortion rights ahead of this week’s debate |
President Joe Biden’s campaign is out with a new video attacking former President Donald Trump on abortion rights, marking the second anniversary of the Supreme Court overturning of Roe v. Wade, and coming three days before the candidates face off in their first 2024 debate. “Roe is just the beginning,” Biden says in the video, part of an effort by Democrats to keep the issue of abortion front and center ahead of the November election. Trump said in April that he believes abortion restrictions should be left up to individual states, and he has repeatedly taken credit for the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In recent days, Biden has been preparing for Thursday’s debate by huddling with advisers at Camp David, while Trump has been holding private policy sessions and campaigning on the trail. |
Shark attack kills “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor and surfing legend in Hawaii |
Actor and famed surfer Tamayo Perry has died after an apparent shark attack in Hawaii on Sunday, authorities said. Perry, who appeared in films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and “Blue Crush” as well as TV shows like “Hawaii: Five-O,” was killed on Oahu's north shore, where he had worked for Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services for eight years, according to officials. Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement that Perry “tragically lost his life today in an apparent shark attack on the North Shore.” A caller told dispatchers that it appeared the victim suffered more than one shark bite, according to the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. |
