CDC director orders agency overhaul after Covid missteps |
---|
|
---|
“For 75 years, CDC and public health have been preparing for COVID-19, and in our big moment, our performance did not reliably meet expectations,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a statement. |
---|
|
---|
The public guidance on Covid has been “confusing and overwhelming,” according to a background briefing document provided by the CDC. |
---|
|
---|
Walensky outlined the changes in an email to CDC staffers this afternoon, including an overhaul of how the agency analyzes and shares data, and how quickly the CDC shares information with the public. |
---|
|
---|
“My goal is a new, public health action-oriented culture at CDC that emphasizes accountability, collaboration, communication, and timeliness,” Walensky wrote. “I want us all to do better and it starts with CDC leading the way.” |

Cheney “thinking about” presidential run after primary loss |
---|
|
---|
Rep. Liz Cheney, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, said she is “thinking about” running for president in 2024 after a bruising defeat to a Trump-backed candidate in Wyoming’s GOP primary. |
---|
|
---|
“That’s a decision that I’m going to make in the coming months, and I’m not going to make any announcements here this morning — but it is something that I am thinking about,” Cheney told NBC’s “TODAY” show. |
---|
|
---|
The three-term congresswoman’s defeat by Harriet Hageman by more than 37 points was a reminder of Trump’s continued influence over the Republican party. |
---|
|
---|
Cheney, the vice chairman of the January 6th committee, and one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the insurrection, has been a top target of the former president, as he seeks to purge the party of his detractors. |
---|
|
---|
Cheney told NBC News that Trump remains a “a very grave threat and risk to our republic,” and said defeating him will require “a broad and united front” of Republicans, Democrats and independents. “That’s what I intend to be part of,” she said. |

Pence says he “would consider” testifying before January 6th committee |
---|
|
---|
Former Vice President Mike Pence said today that he would consider testifying before the House select committee investigating the January 6th attack, if he’s asked. |
---|
|
---|
“If there was an invitation to participate, I would consider it,” Pence said, replying to a question at an event in New Hampshire. |
---|
|
---|
“It would be unprecedented in history for a vice president to be summoned to testify on Capitol Hill, but as I said, I don’t want to prejudge,” Pence said. |
---|
|
---|
The former vice president called on fellow Republicans to stop lashing out at the FBI in the wake of the search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. |
---|
|
---|
“Our party stands with the men and women who stand on the thin blue line at the federal and state and local level, and these attacks on the FBI must stop,” Pence said. “Calls to defund the F.B.I. are just as wrong as calls to defund the police.” |
---|
|
---|
Pence also hinted at a 2024 presidential run of his own. “I never spent a lot of time in New Hampshire, but I may someday,” he said. |

Giuliani faces Georgia grand jury in Trump election investigation |
---|
|
---|
Rudy Giuliani is appearing court today in Atlanta, where he is expected to testify before the special grand jury investigating alleged election interference by Donald Trump and his allies. |
---|
|
---|
“We will not talk about this until it's over. It's a grand jury, and grand juries as I recall are secret,” said Giuliani, Trump’s former attorney and longtime ally, as he arrived at the courthouse. |
---|
|
---|
Giuliani was initially subpoenaed as a material witness as part of the investigation into what the Fulton County district attorney described as “coordinated attempts to unlawfully alter the outcome of the 2020 elections.” |
---|
|
---|
The subpoena accused Giuliani of making false statements at legislative hearings in Georgia, when he claimed there was “widespread voter fraud” in the state. |
