Week 5 at WPS was a blast Active Transport to School Scootering went well last week. We are so lucky to have people in our community to come in and work with our children to teach them about keeping safe on the roads by getting out there on their scooters, feet, bus and bikes. Thanks to our Police Education Officer Phil Vink, to Matti from the QLDC and to his team who have been working with us over the last few weeks to promote safe, active transport to school. Please could you remind your children, when they are cycling to and from school to slow down going around corners, to cross roads carefully and to take care. We are concerned with some of our student cyclists who are not taking enough care. Tell them to SLOW DOWN! STAY IN CONTROL! and only cross a road where they have full visibility, not in between parked cars etc. The patrolled crossing on Kings Drive, down the footpath and across the crossing to the bike stands by the hall, are areas we will be monitoring more closely, as riders are hooning down there. Please if you are in a car keep an eye out for bikes and scooters. And parents please join us in reminding (my husband calls it nagging) your children to KEEP SAFE! Elgregoes Performance On Friday Elgregoe performed and as usual it was a magical, funny show and the children were transfixed with learning about our school values with many laughs being heard from the hall. Creatives Project Chrissy Wickes has started working with Pods 1 and 2 on the Creatives Project, 'Who Are We - Ko Wai Tatou'. Along with our lead teacher for this project, Kath Nicholson, Chrissy has been engaging with children exploring ideas about who we are as individuals, family members, school students and as members of our local community. They will then come up with a way of communicating these ideals and qualities in a 3D art form along the lines of construction/sculpture. See more info later in the newsletter. Swimming Pod 8 swam last week and this week it is Pod 7s time in the pool. Thanks to the instructors who, as usual, do an excellent job of teaching our tamariki to swim and to be safe in the water. Assembly last Friday It was fabulous to see the smiling faces of parents at the Pod 5 assembly last week. Thanks Pod 5 for a fabulous assembly jam packed with all the learning you have been doing. What a busy first 5 weeks the children in Pod 5 have had. All of the children presented so clearly and confidently and the singing was amazing. Thanks for kicking off with our first assembly for the year with such enthusiasm and energy. Run, Jump, Throw Today we had our Years 1, 2 and 3 students take part in our Junior Run, Jump and Throw event. We had some great results to cap off a fabulous day. Thanks to the PTA for the sausage sizzle, drinks and ice blocks - well received by us all. And thanks to the many parents who turned up to cheer and support our children. Thanks Charlotte Lawrie and Jason for great organisation of the day. Thursday 16th March STRIKE DAY for secondary teachers and it looks very much like primary teachers will also be striking on this day. We are canvasing for smaller class sizes, more support for learners with diverse needs, more teacher aides and other conditions that are part of your child's learning environment and teachers work conditions. PTA Raffles This is our big fundraiser for Term 1. Tickets are available for sale now in the school office. There are lots of fabulous prizes in 6 wonderful hampers and a beer fridge! $5 for one ticket, $20 for 5 tickets. Thank you to everyone who contributed goods, we appreciate your support. Term 3 Enrolments This year Wānaka Primary School is not taking enrolments for children coming in Term 3, who intend to engage in any snowsport programmes during the school week. Families will need to make their own arrangements for their children's schooling. The correspondence school, Te Kura, is able to provide online learning whilst students are residing in Wānaka. You can also approach your current school and seek online learning from them for term 3. Enrolling at Wānaka Primary School is not an option for children who are in snowsports programmes during the school week, as this does not constitute regular attendance. |

Creatives in Schools Project It was exciting to begin working with our youngest students last week. Chrissy and Kath met tamariki from Pods 2 and 3, who had a blast drawing 'without looking' while music played, and then imagining a magical bird or tree through their art work. We are very lucky to have been given the opportunity to hold an exhibition in conjunction with the Festival of Colour and our work with students over the next few weeks will contribute towards this. Check out F.O.C. social media for details! We really appreciate that our students can be involved in this fabulous local event showcasing the Arts - we'll provide info around opening days/times in upcoming newsletters. |

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours. The current goal is: 'I wear the correct uniform with pride'. |

Senior Athletics Day (Years 4-6) Tuesday 14th March (PP - Thursday 16th March) All students in years four to six will have the opportunity to participate in the following events: Throws: shot put, discus and vortex Running: sprints (60m for Years 4 and 5, 75m for Year 6), 800m and 60m hurdles Jumps: high jump and long jump Students will be asked to choose to participate in either the non-competitive or competitive division. The competitive division will allow for: competing for individual and overall placings in their year groups eligibility for qualification to the Upper Clutha event (all events except vortex) The non-competitive athletes will have a participation focus while earning points for their tribes. Students can choose to be in the competitive division for individual events (eg. discus and sprints, non-competitive in the others). Please talk to your children to help them decide which division they would prefer to take part in. Because of the large number of children taking part, we are not able to hold all events on Tuesday. The 800m and discus events will be held on an alternative day and students advised separately. All events will be on the school field. Children will need to wear trainers (closed shoes are compulsory for the throws) and we will encourage them to dress in tribe colours. Spike shoes are not permitted. Water bottles, plenty of lunch and snacks, hats and sunscreen are all a must too. The PTA will be selling sausages, drinks and ice blocks :-) Can you help? To help run the event as efficiently as possible we would appreciate offers of parent help. If you are able to offer an hour or two, please could you email: [email protected]. Alternatively, while watching your child(ren) take part, please let teachers know if you are happy to roll back shot puts, rake the long jump pit or put a high jump bar in place, etc. Thank you! Please come along to enjoy watching and supporting your children participate, but we ask you to respect our policy for school events by not bringing dogs. Please also be respectful of areas that are designated for participants only. If the event is postponed, notification will be placed on the school website and app by 8am. |

Wānaka Trail Ride Do you have experience in emergency services? Do you enjoy cricket? We need a couple of extra bods in the Comms Tent on Trail Ride day. The team have years of experience, so it will be relatively easy for a newcomer to slot in to this essential component of the WTR event. The H&S plans are in place, there’s hot drinks and baking in the Volunteers Tent, so it’s a matter of enjoying the day, communicating with marshals, monitoring how the ride progresses, and assisting Dave in taking control of procedures in the event of an accident or incident. If you have experience using two-way radios, can read a map, keep records and a clear head, we would love to hear from you. Don’t delay – help us to keep up the momentum for WTR 2023 by signing up for a volunteer role today! For information on all roles and to register, please click here for the website. Cheers, on behalf of the WTR crew – Alix, Anne-Marie, Gillian, Jen, Lucy, Phil, and Steph Rachel Allibone (Volunteer Coordinator) M: 021 1029 130 [email protected] What do cricket and the Comms Tent have in common? A lot of same with the occasional bit of drama. Photosport. |
