For a moment I hesitate. Honestly, I do. After the rich Belgian ICW day, a valuable alternation between specialized know-how on the one hand and helicopter views on the other, do I still want to click on the link of Gather Town? Do I still feel like networking? Comfortable at home... Unlike at a live reception, there is the opportunity to click away your presence and no one notices. You won't bump into anyone near the ladies room, and you will not pass a desk where you leave your badge or day pass. But my curiosity prevails. What's Gather Town anyway? Before I know it, my index finger taps the computer mouse and I'm asked to create an avatar. Okay then... Just fit myself into a virtual green dress and follow the short introduction to learn how to make this avatar move in the virtual reception area. Simple... Left arrow, down arrow... My greenish little puppet is being launched on an abstract square surface in which a bar and several rooms are drawn. Enter the room? Why not! I do recognize some names of other attendees. As I go in, immediately the video chat screens of the other avatars in the room fold open. "Hey! How nice! You're here too! " "Shall we just walk over to the bar so I can introduce you to someone there?" 'Awesome!' Maybe you and I will see each other in Gather Town next time? ICF Belgium will make the platform available more often for future online events. Just click! And... feel free to provide your own drink, so we can make a virtual "chin chin" :-)' Pascale Perard, President-Elect 2022 ICFB |
