As from January 2018, a new VAT regulation on import cargo has been implemented in the United Arab Emirates. From now on, 5% import Value Added Tax (VAT) will be charged by customs on the CIF value and customs duty value of imported goods. This means that the value includes freight and insurance charges plus customs duties, excise duties and any other charge that may occur. The importer needs to have a TRN (Transaction Reference Number), which can be applied for the FTA (Federal Tax Authority) Companies situated in the Jebel Ali Free zone are exempted from this rule.
