Nils Eekhoff was able to finish off Development Team Sunweb's hard work today, taking the win at the U23 edition of Paris-Roubaix. In a day where tactics were executed to perfection, Development Team Sunweb spent the day at the head of the peloton to make the race their own. As the days main breakaway went clear which had included Development Team Sunweb's Leon Rohde returned to the bunch, more attacks were launched and a group of riders jumped clear. With Development Team Sunweb initially missing the split, Nils immediately joined a furious chase along with the newly crowned U23 German national road race champion Max Kanter in a bid to close the gap. Their efforts prevailed, and the group reached the leaders in time for a fast dash to the line at Roubaix velodrome. A brilliant display of strength saw Nils power through to the line passing all of his rivals and taking advantage of his past track experience, to take the incredibly prestigious victory. After the win Nils said: "I love this race, there were some tricky moments where I started to doubt myself but the team really motivated me through it. When we missed the final break Max really helped me to get across to the group, it was great corporation to get back up there. I can't thank the team enough for all of their work out there, tactically everything worked out and its a great feeling to take the win. This is one of the most beautiful races on our calendar so I am thrilled with how the day went." |
