Banjoist Noam Pikelny Makes Celebrity Series Debut Feb. 11th With Special Guest Anaïs Mitchell
|
Noam Pikelny, hailed by the Chicago Tribune as the “pros’ top banjo picker,” has emerged as the preeminent banjoist of his generation. Noam is a founding member of Punch Brothers, a string ensemble which The Boston Globe calls “a virtuosic revelation” and The New Yorker describes as “wide- ranging and restlessly imaginative.” Singer and songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, who appeared on the Series in 2016’s Use Your Voice with Patty Griffin and Sara Watkins, appears as a special guest. Born and raised in Vermont, Anaïs founded her own record company in 2012 and has since recorded six full-length albums, including 2010’s sensationally-reviewed Hadestown, a folk opera based on the Orpheus myth. Mitchell has headlined shows worldwide as well as supporting tours for Bon Iver, Ani Difranco, The Low Anthem (all of whom appear as guest singers on Hadestown) Josh Ritter, and Punch Brothers. Alvin Ailey Dancers Visit in January
| On January 19-20, three dancers from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater presented a masterclass at Boston Arts Academy, and workshops for students with special needs at the Henderson Inclusion School, Kennedy Day School, and the Cotting School. We are grateful to The Peabody Foundation, which has supported Celebrity Series programs for students with special needs since 1997. The Ailey trio also participated in a Neighborhood Arts workshop with composer Ryan Edwards on January 18 at Sumner Boys & Girls Club in Roslindale, where the dancers discussed premiering new works and improvised dance moves to original music pieces composed by students.
