NOVEMBER IN THE LIBRARY


Library Booth at Sustainability Fair

On Saturday, November 2 from 10 AM to 3 PM in the Manchester Community Center the local Sustainability Committee will be hosting a Sustainability Fair. The Manchester Library will have a booth at the fair to share resources on how to reduce waste and to live a more sustainable lifestyle. Additionally, from 10 AM to 1 PM the library booth will have materials and instructions on how to make your own homemade beeswax food wraps!

Seaside Knitwits 

The final session of Seaside Knitwits will be on November 4th at 4 PM. This will be the last day to donate knitted hats made for Caps for Beantown(a registered 501c3 group) to receive and distribute in time for cold weather. If you are interested in donating a knitted or crocheted hats for Boston children (sizes infant through 18 years old), the library will be finishing and packing on November 4th. Anyone is welcome to join in and spread the word to other friends. For more information, contact, Sara Collins, [email protected].

Come Write In with Crystal Condakes Karlberg

Calling all writers and anyone who wants to write. The Manchester Public Library will be hosting two writing sessions on Monday, November 4th and Wednesday, November 20th from 6 PM – 7:30 PM for anyone who would like a space to work on their writing. Whether you are a beginning writer or you are already working on a project, this will be a great opportunity. In one area of the library, we will offer a writing group format complete with prompts and light critique for anyone who wants it. Other areas of the library will be available for those who just need a time and place to get their ideas down. Directing the workshops will be Manchester resident Crystal Condakes Karlberg. She has been participating and leading writing workshops for 20+ years. Her poetry has recently been published by Oddball Magazine, Mom Egg Review, and Soundings East. She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2018.  

Hearthside Book Group

The next meeting of the Hearthside Book Group is Tuesday, November 5th at 4 PM. The group will discuss “A Good American Family: The Red Scare and my Father” by David Maraniss. New members are always welcome.

Nonfiction Book Group

The next meeting of the Nonfiction Book Group is Wednesday, November 6th at 6:30 PM. The group will discuss “Fascism: A Warning” by Madeline Albright. New members are always welcome.

Drop-In Knitting Sessions

Drop-in knitting sessions will begin November 7th through March from 2:30-3:30 PM on Thursday afternoons. Please join us at the Roundtable and bring your old or new project! We welcome beginners and experienced crafters, all ages. Assistance is sometimes available, many of our knitters have much more experience than we do and are quite helpful! If you have any questions, or would like to participate or assist, please call perennial knitter beginner, Sara Collins, Library Director, 978-526-2011.

Veteran’s Day

The Library will be closed on Monday, November 11th in observance of the Veteran’s Day holiday. The Library will reopen on Tuesday, November 12th from 1 PM-8 PM.

Drop-In Tech Help

Starting November 14th Adult Services Librarian Rachael Meneades will be available on Thursdays afternoons from 3 PM - 5 PM to help with basic new device questions. Want to use a laptop in the Library or the iPad? Need help downloading ebooks or audiobooks on your phone with one of the library’s free services? Interested in learning more about the library’s useful online databases? Rachael will be happy to help you with these questions and more.

November Movie Night

On Friday, November 15th at 5:30 PM the library will be showing a movie based off a popular novel written by Garth Stein that follows the story of a racecar driver and his dog. This movie stars Kevin Costner, Milo Ventimiglia, and Amanda Seyfriend. Bring your own drink, the Library will provide popcorn. Klassic Kreations Chocolate and Coffee Program

On Saturday, November 16th at 11 AM teens and adults are welcome to join chocolatier Kim Larkin at the Manchester Library for her Klassic Kreations Perky Pairing program where you can learn how to make chocolate and discover why it’s such a great combination with coffee! Kim’s program will cover the interesting history and benefits of coffee and where it hails from, in addition to some interactive trivia and exploring the chocolate making production. Participants will also get to make and take home their own treats! There will be a demonstration of a commercial chocolate tempering machine and several workstations where different types of melted chocolate will be available to try out a selection of chocolatier techniques. Kim’s visit is supported by a grant from the Manchester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

The Vaping Epidemic: How bad is it, and what can we do about it?

On Monday, November 18th at 6:30 PM Dr. Suzanne Graves will educate the community on the vaping epidemic and discuss her work to get an anti-vaping campaign started with a goal of preventing and stopping at risk youth from starting vaping.

Suzanne Graves is a one of the Senior Physicians with Garden City Pediatrics in Beverly. She is an active member of the Medical Staff at Beverly Hospital. Suzanne is also the President of the Evelyn Lilly Lutz Foundation. This non-profit organization is a supporting organization for Beverly Hospital. The mission of the Foundation is to encourage and support educational, healthcare and research initiatives and continuing education.

Suzanne Graves is a one of the Senior Physicians with Garden City Pediatrics in Beverly. She joined GCPA in the summer of 1993 after completing her Chief Residency in Pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Suzanne enjoys a busy practice that now includes many second-generation patients allowing for extended continuity of care.

She is an active member of the Medical Staff at Beverly Hospital. Suzanne is also the President of the Evelyn Lilly Lutz Foundation. This non-profit organization is a supporting organization for Beverly Hospital. The mission of the Foundation is to encourage and support educational, healthcare and research initiatives and continuing education. In her role as President, she has worked to get an anti-vaping campaign started with a goal of preventing and stopping at risk youth from starting vaping.

Suzanne lives with her husband, John in Manchester, Massachusetts and has three children, Matthew, Nathan and Margaret. She enjoys horse riding, skiing, long distance walking, knitting, scrapbooking and reading in her spare time.

Town Hall

The library will be closing at 6 PM on Tuesday, November 19th due to the Manchester Town Hall Meeting. The library will reopen on Wednesday, November 20th from 10 AM – 8 PM.

Mystery Book Group

The Mystery Book Group will meet Friday, November 22nd at 10:30 AM to discuss Absolute Power by David Baldacci. New members are always welcome.

Thanksgiving Holiday Hours

The Library will close early on Wednesday the 27th at 4 PM, and will not be open Thursday the 28th and Friday the 29th. The Library will reopen on Saturday the 30th from 10 AM to 5 PM.
