Vice President Kamala Harris swears in new senators Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock and Alex Padilla, giving Democrats control of the Senate

The newly sworn-in Democrats give the chamber a 50-50 split, which effectively hands Democrats the majority because Harris will be the tie-breaking vote in the chamber. Ossoff and Warnock defeated Republican incumbents in the Jan. 5 Georgia runoff. Padilla was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill Harris’ California Senate seat, making him the first Latino senator in the state’s history.
