If impeached, a trial in the Senate for President Trump likely won't start until after he leaves office

The Senate is on a recess break and set to reconvene Jan. 19 – one day before President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. While Democrats have been hopeful to immediately move forward on a Senate impeachment trial, the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office indicating that a trial would not occur until the Senate is back in session.
