July 29, 2020 Letter from the editor: The summer heat continues and many of us remain cooped up at home. Luckily, there are a few safe ways you can get outside and check out some art. Our staff writer Valentina Di Liscia rounds up a few favorite displays of public art from the Bronx Documentary Center’s third annual Latin American Foto Fest, which has moved to billboards and other sites across the South Bronx in light of the pandemic. DUMBO Open Studios has also changed shape, and is now in its final week of its virtual edition. Check out some highlights here. In more upsetting news, Valentina also reports on a “pressure campaign” taking place at Columbia University, where backlash has grown in response to a request by the Vice President of the School of Arts and Sciences. In an email to staff, she asked that faculty and adjunct instructors “reconsider” their decision to teach solely online. Fellow staffer Hakim Bishara also shares that the Lower East Side’s Tenement Museum has become the latest to institute a devastating round of layoffs, including its entire staff of part-time educators. On a lighter note, I recently had a chance to speak with curator Boon Hui Tan about his love of New York, the importance of individual actions in affecting change, and his current “main obsession” — co-curating the upcoming Asia Society Triennial. After the Trump administration walked back regulations that would revoke the visa status of all international students attending online-only schools, ICE updated the ruling to target incoming students.
