We hope you had a lovely Memorial Day Weekend. Historically, now is the unofficial beginning of summer, but, like, where is she? It’s looking cool and rainy all week. The funding outlook for the city’s cultural organizations isn’t much sunnier. Last week, artists, museum workers, public school educators, nonprofit leaders, and many more rallied in the rain outside City Council hearings on Mayor Adams’s budget proposal. In the wake of federal cuts, cultural advocates are asking the mayor to add $30 million — less than 0.03% of the budget — to its $215 million proposed allocation, a total that would still fall short of last year’s. Still, there’s lots to be excited about. Hunter’s MFA show, for instance, was seriously impressive, and it’s your last shot to see it, as it’s only up at their Tribeca gallery through tomorrow. These artists are going places — John Yau discovered Xingzi Gu at an NYC MFA show a couple years ago, and now he reviews her show of dreamy paintings at Clearing gallery below. On the other side of the spectrum, check out the unglazed ceramic alligator sculptures of Stanley Rosen, who first exhibited at a commercial gallery in 2017 at the age of 90. His exhibition’s only about a five-minute walk away, but it’s worlds apart.
