April 1, 2020 Letter from the editor: Feeling restless yet? Luckily, the Brooklyn-based nonprofit Recess will be hosting its first edition of “Making from Home” with artist Tiffany Jaeyeon Shin, who will be leading an ASMR-style water kimchi tutorial. (Think lots of delightful crunching sounds, and a great, natural way to boost your immune system.) Elsewhere, and across New York, pressure is mounting for state legislators to suspend rent payments as many struggle financially due to the ongoing pandemic. This past weekend, activist collective the Illuminator projected some of their demands — “CANCEL THE RENT,” “End Bail,” and “Healthcare for All” — onto a Manhattan skyscraper. Small and mid-size galleries have been feeling the pinch particularly hard, and yet many are still facing threats from landlords. Our staff writer Hakim Bishara speaks with gallerists here, and shares news of a petition calling for greater financial relief for struggling small businesses in New York.
