Over the past year we have had a lot of changes in how we interact with our friends, families, and even colleagues. The personal connection of a hug or shaking hands has all but ceased to exist. For lots of folks, this increases stress and feelings of loneliness and isolation. Although we FaceTime and Zoom and have many Teams meetings, it is just not the same. These feelings can cause stress and the release of cortisol in the body. This can lead to an increase in type 2 diabetes, as seen in our Laterpay article from A’Kira Shavers, PharmD Candidate 2021, South College School of Pharmacy. Check out what she has found, and remember to give that extra smile when you are having a Telehealth appointment.

Newsflash: Metformin Reduces COVID-19 Death

Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 and increased risk of death. For those on metformin before a diagnosis of COVID-19, it is associated with reduced odds of related mortality, according to a study published online Jan. 13 in Frontiers in Endocrinology.

Did You Know? Skipping Dinner Tied to Weight Gain:

A study in Nutrients found that not eating an evening meal significantly increases the likelihood of ≥10% weight gain and having a body mass index over 25, categorized as overweight/obese. Based on data from 26,433 students, the findings also showed that those who skipped dinner, whether always or occasionally, were more likely to skip other meals more often, have dinner later, have a shorter sleep, and tended to be older and a drinker or a smoker.
The results suggest that skipping dinner, which was much less prevalent than skipping breakfast, has a stronger association with weight gain and overweight/obesity than skipping breakfast, the study said. The researchers suggested that skipping dinner could lead to weight gain because it makes people hungrier, so they eat more over the day. Another possible explanation, they said, is that dinner is typically a meal that lends itself to nutritious foods like lean proteins and vegetables, so skipping dinner may mean a lower quality diet.
