Unemployment fraud: A new wave of Ohioans are discovering for the first time that their personal information was used by scammers to file fraudulent unemployment claims, thanks to letters sent by the state notifying people that special federal pandemic benefits are ending. Jeremy Pelzer reports that the state says in most cases their claims were already flagged for fraud and no payment was issued. But Ohioans should report such letters.
Redistricting arguments: Two groups of Republicans on the Ohio Redistricting Commission are making significantly different arguments in court as they respond to lawsuits alleging the new state House and Senate maps violate state constitutional rules approved by voters as part of an anti-gerrymandering reform. Andrew Tobias reports on the details.
Anti-vax mandate: An Ohio House bill introduced Tuesday afternoon would allow schools and employers to mandate vaccines, but it would also allow in most situations a number of exemptions. Laura Hancock reports the bill is leadership’s response to the HB 248, which prohibited employers - including healthcare facilities - from mandating the coronavirus and other vaccines.
Bishop Pilla: Bishop Anthony M. Pilla was remembered Tuesday as a “true shepherd of hearts” during his quarter-century tenure as bishop for the Diocese of Cleveland. Cameron Fields reports that hundreds filled the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist to pay their respects to Pilla, a Cleveland native who died Sept. 21 at the age of 88. Pilla was the ninth bishop for the Cleveland diocese, serving in the role from 1981 to 2006. U.S. attorney: President Joe Biden has nominated a new U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, which is overseeing the federal corruption investigation into House Bill 6 and other probes at the Ohio Statehouse. East Cleveland: In recent years, police departments across the country have sought to hire officers to mirror their communities, improving faith residents have in their police departments. But in East Cleveland, where nearly 91 percent of residents are Black, more than half of its police officers are white, reports John Caniglia. In the first four months of 2021, one officer – who had been in the department less than a year -- took part in 31 chases.
This Week in the CLE: The Ohio Redistricting Commission has been sued for a third time over new gerrymandered maps for the state House and Senate, and Republicans had to respond Tuesday. We’re talking about the cases on This Week in the CLE, cleveland.com’s daily half-hour news podcast.

FirstEnergy Stadium: The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio is opening an investigation into whether FirstEnergy Corp. wrongly used ratepayer money to pay for naming rights to Cleveland’s FirstEnergy Stadium, the Cleveland Browns’ home field, reports Jeremy Pelzer. The investigation comes at the request of state Rep. Kent Smith, a Euclid Democrat who, along with other Democratic legislators, has called on the city of Cleveland to revert the name of FirstEnergy Stadium back to Cleveland Browns Stadium because of the utility’s involvement in the House Bill 6 bribery scandal.
Ohio school board: A bill in the Ohio House seeks to eliminate the eight members of the State Board of Education who are appointed by the governor, leaving 11 members who are elected. House Bill 298 has Republican and Democratic sponsors who say the legislation is needed to create a board that is accountable to the voters who elect them and to end alleged political influence on education by the governor’s office, reports Laura Hancock.
Hudson schools: Dozens of community members attended the Hudson City School District Board of Education meeting Monday to show support for the district, two weeks after controversy erupted over the use of a book of writing prompts that many parents deemed inappropriate.
