BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer It was a tip from a family member, not Baton Rouge police, that led West Baton Rouge Sheriff's deputies to discover that a BRPD helicopter had crashed, killing two officers on Sunday, the sheriff's office said yesterday. That raises a burning question: Why did it take hours to realize the crash had happened? Among other new information we gathered yesterday about the crash: BRPD identified the officers who died as Sgt. David Poirrier and Cpl. Scotty Canezaro.The FAA said the crash happened when the tail rotor hit a tree.The air traffic control tower at the Baton Rouge Metro Airport, where the helicopter took off, was likely unmanned at the time of the crash.We'll be continuing to follow this story for more information.
