Dear Reader, The World Health Organisation is warning of a global food shortage in 2023. Did you hear about this? Predictably, they blame climate change and the war in Ukraine. That doesn’t help you much. But you should have it in your mind that food prices in Australia are likely to go up in 2023 — maybe significantly — due to supply constraints. Some economists are sounding the alarm because they say this is going to coincide with a major recession, which could really put the squeeze on working- and middle-class families. Jim Rickards is one analyst who is taking this twin threat extremely seriously. So much so that he’s recommending you take urgent, practical action. He says you should clear an area of your house or garage now and store enough water, canned food and toiletries to last three months. This doesn’t make you a ‘doomsday prepper’, says Jim. It makes you smart. We all remember what happened with COVID. No one wants to get caught out again. You can read Jim’s warning in full here. He’s not saying you should rush out to Costco and immediately clear the shelves. He’s recommending that you start stocking up, steadily, gradually, bit by bit, week by week, until you have three months’ worth of basic supplies. This is in advance of shortages...higher prices...and a major economic downturn...all things Jim is predicting for the second half of 2023. The other thing he suggests is to try and secure an independent source of power for your property. That might be logs or coal for a wood burner. Best to do this soon in case Australian state governments make the burning of fossil fuels illegal (I’m only half joking). These are just two of the many pieces of sound advice in Jim’s new book, SOLD OUT: How Broken Supply Chains, Surging Inflation, and Political Instability Will Sink the Global Economy. I’d like to send you a digital copy of this book right away.
