Heidi Allen MP, Dr Amal Marogy and Sr Pat Robb addressed a full church at Cambourne, with people from churches and communities across South Cambs, about our response to the refugee crisis – as the fifth anniversary of the fighting in Syria draws near. It was heartening to hear compassion take the foreground, not denying the need for thought-through action, but challenging narrow-mindedness and self-interest. Heidi Allen continues to impress, and Dr Marogy’s testimony as a Chaldaen Christian from Northern Iraq whose own aunt, a nun, had been taken captive was deeply moving. A conference was held in Cambridge for councillors and other local movers and shakers across the East of England a few days ago: we look forward to hearing how our local district councils will react, hopefully making plans to receive a share of the refugees. The present targets require us to find homes for just four families per constituency: surely within our grasp.
