New Michigan power lines will disrupt farms, airstrips and homesteads, residents say |
Up for debate: A Michigan company developing a major set of high-voltage transmission lines is finding out its proposed routes are continuing to face harsh scrutiny from the landowners whose property will be necessary to get them built, even as state environmental groups and other advocates extoll the power lines’ virtues. The $850-million projects have been hailed as the largest energy transmission upgrades in Michigan history, supported by top state leaders like Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, utility watchdogs and environmental groups, who frame it as a way to harden the grid against climate change-fueled storms and a step on the path away from fossil fuel-based electricity. Not having it: A national firm is eying land in Saline Township for a utility-scale lithium battery power storage facility, sparking pushback from residents. It has prompted township officials to consider amending local rules to potentially be able to exert more local control over the project, as new state-level regulations soon go into effect. |

Russian court sentences Michigan man, 72, to nearly 7 years in prison for fighting in Ukraine |
Behind bars: A Russian court has sentenced a Michigan man to nearly seven years in prison for allegedly fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. Prosecutors said Stephen Hubbard, who is from Michigan, signed a contract with the Ukrainian military after Russia sent troops into the country in February 2022. He fought alongside them until being captured two months later. Hubbard is the first American known to have been convicted on charges of fighting as a mercenary in the Ukrainian conflict. As police searched his Bay City house for evidence of a grotesque homicide, Robert D. Tweedly Jr. told them he wanted to make a statement. He ended up confessing to killing Justie T. Stilwell, saying he shoved the middle school custodian down a flight of basement stairs before strangling him, according to police. It was not the first time Tweedly, 40, reportedly attacked and choked a man from a previous relationship in his house, having done so nine years earlier in a neighboring county . In remembrance: Flushing Township police K-9 Colt is being remembered for his service after to the community. Colt, who started as a canine in 2014 and was taken out of service in 2021, died on Sept. 23 after a two-month bout with cancer. |

Michigan's weather this week: Any rain? Any frost? |
Forecast: This week will definitely have a fall feel, but it won’t have much if any rain. There could be a passing quick shower over northeast Lower Michigan and the Thumb on Tuesday. The next showers would also be very scattered Saturday and Sunday. Far southwest Lower Michigan may not have a drop of rain in the next week. Southern Michigan will make it into the 60s while Northern Michigan will be held in the 50s this week. Sight to see: A very bright fireball was seen throughout the Midwest on Saturday night, with hundreds of eyewitnesses filing reports, according to NASA. Around 11:45 p.m. between Covert and Watervliet in West Michigan, Laura White captured a video of the meteor passing. Also in the skies: If you missed Monday night's Draconid meteor shower, you might get another chance to see it Tuesday night (depending on conditions) as its peak continues. |

Detroit Tigers first home playoff game in decade to feature drone show, block party |
Party: The Detroit Tigers are celebrating the team’s first trip to the playoffs and first home playoff game in a decade with multiple free activities. There will be a drone show outside of Comerica Park, presented by Meijer, today, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. On game day Wednesday, there will be a pregame block party starting at noon just outside of the stadium on Witherell Street. Going away: Western Michigan University has agreed to a new partnership with the Detroit Lions, making the school the official educational partner of the team. The three-year deal means there will be advertising for the university at Ford Field and alumni events will be held at the stadium, according to a press release from the university. Big honor: The Michigan Golf Course Association announced this month that the Jack Nicklaus Signature design course at Harbor Shores Resort has been named the 2024 Michigan Golf Course of the Year. |

One of the biggest T. Rex cast skeletons in the world is now in Michigan |
Larger than life: You can see one of the largest T. Rex cast skeletons on earth at a new exhibit which just opened in Michigan. “Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family” is at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit through January 12, 2025. The exhibition features Scotty, one of the largest full-sized T. Rex cast skeletons. There’s also other tyrannosaur skeleton casts, fossils and interactive stations. The exhibition was created by the Australian Museum. Popular place to be: Although famous for its springtime tulips, Holland’s de Zwaan windmill is becoming a four-season destination. The historic windmill nearly broke another visitor record this season as it “welkomed” more than 130,000 guests since April. To meet the demand, the attraction is staying open on weekends into mid-October and is bringing back special events this fall and winter. The pedestrian tunnel connecting Petosky to Lake Michigan has been transformed into a work of art with a 270-degree spray painted mural.The tunnel in downtown Petoskey feels like walking through an underwater aquarium, complete with fish native to Michigan. The 1,955-square-foot mural covers the walls and ceiling, and the city’s public piano. |
